Week 56 This week we get the last bit of the 2nd cat, and some more brass bulkheads
The bits we received
And what we did with them
The catapult was assembled in the same way as the previous one. Kilroy seems pleased with the way it turned out.
The bulkheads are the same process as the previous one. Here are some close ups.
Finally, the brasswork round the barbette for turret Caesar. This wasn't quite as straight forward as I expected. Firstly, the part is too long, and I had to cut about 1/16" off. Scissors are favourite for this, and tidy the end up with a file. I pushed the first two nails in with long nosed pliers. Then I stuck the brass sheet down with superglue. I did this bit by bit. I.e. Glue a bit down and clamp it. When it's dry, repeat the process, gluing the next section down. However, I didn't get a very good bond with superglue, even though I had roughened the back of the brass with sandpaper. So for the last section I switched to slow setting Araldite. This worked much better, and I'll use it for the rest of the brass to wood joints. I drilled a couple of pilot holes in the brass with a pin vice and 0.5mm drill. This allowed me to get the nails in and then I let the barbette set over night. The next job is to file off the nail heads and make the joint smooth.
Here are the nail heads filed off. I just need to apply some filler to make the join disappear completely.
The imperfections around the nail heads were filled with 'Green Stuff' which is an epoxy putty available from Games Workshop. It's very good stuff as it's very fine, and sticks well. I put in on and smoothed it out with a moistened scalpel handle. The result is a pretty smooth finish that should only need a gentle rub with very fine sand paper to finish it off.
