Week 55  This week we get more catapult parts

The bits we received

And what we did with them

At last, we can start assembling the first catapult.  Although this is quite fiddly, the parts fit together perfectly. I followed teh instructions pretty closely.  All assembled with superglue.  Here is the base and sides in place.

Here is part 346.  I found the best was to tackle this was to put it in place and add a drop of super glue to the thin end.  This is just enough to hold it, and allowed a bit of movement before the superglue sets really hard. So when the glue has just set, use a pari of tweezers to move it back into position and get it perfectly square.  Now just apply some more superglue to the other end with a pin.  Capillary action will draw glue into the join.  As this part is underneath the catapult you wont see any excess that is left on the outside.

Here is the underside completed.  These were tricky, but were persuaded into place with a pair of fine tweezers.

The first hand rail.  I use a pair of speacial photo-etch bending pliers for this.  They were quite expensive, but do work well.  Make the bends carefully and try them up against the cat.  With a bit of trial and error you can get the shape perfect, and then it glues in place very easily.  It will be much harder to glue in place if the glue is trying to hold while the brass wants to spring out of position.

Here is the second handrail in place.

Finally the two wheels are glued in place.  I slide them on the shank of a 0.4mm drill, applied a bit of glue, and then put the end ofthe shank in the hole in the cat.  Then I slide the wheel down the drill and pressed it in place for a few seconds.  The drill glued in place as well, but a quick twist soon freed it.  This is the completed cat.

The last job for this week is adding a few more hatches to a bulkhead.

Week 54

Hot tip of the week

A pair of good quality tweezers with fine points are almost essential for assembling the catapult.  Tamiya do a very good pair, although a hunt round your local chemist should also yield something suitable.

How many hours does it take to build the model ??
