Week 23  This week we get the rest of the upper hull planking and a resin stern piece

The bits we received

And what we did with them

The resin stern piece is going to be replaced by a more accurate piece in issue 35, so I'm going to wait for that to arrive.

This planking was a lot easier than last weeks.  I found the easiest way to clamp it was to drill a hole in the plank underneath and hold it in place with a bit of packing.

Here's a close up of the clamping arrangement.

The second plank was just as easy.  it did mean drilling a hole in the plank that I'd just fitted, but a quick smear of filler before sanding will sort this.  Thanks to Kilroy for tightening the clamps ;o)

I've noticed that this planking seems a bit flimsy.  Partly because it's only glued the the planks below on half the width of a plank.  In places there is a visible gap.  Not wide enough to fill, the primer will do that, but it still needs reinforcing.  I'll probably lay a piece of glass tissue and resin around the top of the hull on the inside the strengthen it.

I'm going to leave the deck fixings until I can get hold of some magnets or something.  The screws idea is a bit screwy.  We still have some simulated teak decking to put on top, and screw heads in that will look awful.  A case of "wait and see what Amati are planning" I think.

Things not yet done

Fitting the fore deck
Stern deck part 63 not fitted.
Resin bow piece 67 not fitted

Hot tip of the week

Ironically, the one place where Amati don't suggest reinforcing the inside of the hull is the place where I think it needs it !!

How many hours does it take to build the model ??
