Week 1.  This is where it all starts with the centre section of the keel and a couple of frames

The bits we received

And what we did with them

The keel comes in several sections, and it's most important that these are glued together to form a perfectly straight keel section.  If this is not right then it will be very difficult to get the hull straight, and then you will have problems getting the superstructure to fit properly.  Therefore I'm going to stray from the instructions almost immediately.  The first thing I'm going to do is draw a line down the centre of the keel section.  I will do the same with the remaining keel sections and use this line to make sure they all glue together straight.  Therefore I won't be gluing the frames in place until the keel is completed.  You'll notice that I've also marked the frame numbers at the relevant slots, just so I don't do anything stupid like get the frames on in the wrong order. (Don't laugh - I've done equally daft things before).  I also measure and draw a line down each frame to mark the centre.

I can prepare the frames though.  Here is frame 1 with the deck supports glued in place.

The rest of the parts were dry fitted, and they all fit together very nicely.

The following assembly takes place after week 4

I'm happy to start putting frames on the centre keel plate now that I have three keel plates together.  Here is frame 1 glued in place, carefully making sure it is square and central.

Then I glued frame 4 in place.  I used the side pieces, parts 8, from issue 2 the keep the frame true.  They are a nice snug fit and hold the frame nicely.  Needless to say, the side pieces are NOT glued in place yet.

Hot tip of the week

Glue.  Use a good quality waterproof wood glue if you intend sailing the model.  Normal white PVA is not waterproof and will soften in water.  Then your model is likely start to taking on water and eventually sink.  You could use epoxy, but this will be expensive and difficult to work with.  I will use a waterproof white wood glue.

How many hours does it take to build the model ??
